Manchester United make contact with Torino defender Gleison Bremer regarding a summer move
According to TuttoJuve, via Sport Witness (h/t Express), Manchester United have made contact with Torino defender Gleison Bremer ahead of a potential summer move to bolster their defence.
Bremer has been impressive in Serie A over the past few seasons, having moved to Italy from his native Brazil in 2018. Despite signing Raphael Varane last summer from Real Madrid, it looks like Man United are ready to make moves for a defensive signing this summer given how poor their rearguard has been this term.
This was made pretty evident as city rivals Manchester City outplayed them in a 4-1 away loss at the Etihad Stadium. The Red Devils stood no chance in the second half of the game, with Riyad Mahrez almost singlehandedly torturing our defence as he scored a brace.
Varane was missing from last night’s derby, but centre-backs Victor Lindelof and Harry Maguire raised many questions about the pair’s credentials to survive at a top club like Man United after their performances. There can hardly be any surprise about the side’s interest in Bremer after the City game.
Bremer scouted by United
Despite being the club captain, Maguire has barely looked the part this season as he has committed schoolboy errors time and again and looks well off the pace for an elite defender playing in the Premier League. He has hardly done anything to justify his large price tag.
Given how poor Maguire and the other defenders have been this season, the Red Devils will need to take action in the summer to address these issues at the back. Bremer seems to be someone on the top of their defensive wishlist, given that the side have already sent scouts to watch the Brazilian in action last month.
In many ways, United could have a like-for-like replacement for Maguire in Bremer. The Torino star is said to be a huge threat from set-pieces, with his aerial ability second to none. The former Atletico Mineiro star is also known to be a physical presence and a leader, having led his current side on a few occasions.
Despite these similar qualities as that of Maguire, it may perhaps be improbable to expect that Bremer can come in and replace the club captain as the first-choice centre-back. The Englishman has much more experience than the 24-year-old, and it is never easy for any player to move to the Premier League and adapt so quickly to the game.

Another issue that United need to worry about is the competition in the market to snap up Bremer. Having impressed in Italy, other Serie A clubs like Inter Milan and Juventus are also interested in the player and will battle the Red Devils for the star in the summer.
Despite the competition, it will please United fans to know that their club has already made contact with the defender over a summer move. It indicates how serious the side are about Bremer, and hopefully, we can beat the other interestingparties to his signature at the end of the season.
