Manchester United summer budget revealed if the team fails to get into the Champions League next season

According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Manchester United will cut down their transfer budget in the summer for the incoming new permanent manager if the club does not qualify for the Champions League next season.

Interim manager Ralf Rangnick took over the club only late last year, but the pressure is on him to ensure that the side secures a top-four finish this campaign in order to make sure that they have enough funds in the summer to bring in new faces and bolster the squad.

It is no secret that United are looking for a new permanent manager at the end of the season to replace Rangnick, whose interim position expires in the summer. If the German does manage to secure UCL football for the side next term, the new boss will get a transfer kitty of around £80m to spend.

Currently, the Red Devils sit in fifth place, two points behind Arsenal. However, the Gunners have a whopping three games in hand over us, which puts us in grave danger of missing out on a top-four finish if the north London club continues on their current winning streak.

Summer transfer budget slash

United did not sign anyone in the January transfer window, which may indicate that the club is looking to go dip into the summer market at the end of the season for a possible summer rebuild if the new manager feels that such a change is required.

However, the new man’s budget is all down to where the side finishes this season. It is said that missing out on Champions League football next campaign could see the budget slashed to around £50m. To add to this, last week saw the club post their latest financial figures which revealed that their debt is up 8.6% from their previous result.

In today’s inflated transfer market, any budget cut could have a massive impact on the kind of players that the team can look to sign in the summer. United’s current team look out of sorts at the minute, evidenced by how poor some of them have been this entire season.

Last night’s 4-1 loss to Manchester City showed just how far the Red Devils had fallen behind their noisy neighbours, with the gulf in quality evident in the performance. Rangnick’s men look nothing like the team of old that ruled Manchester in the past without any competition.

It, therefore, becomes crucial that the club secure a UCL qualification spot by the end of the season to bring in new players to help the team become successful again. Transfer funds can also be raised by selling players who are surplus to requirements, which will be up to the new manager to decide.

The incoming new boss may also change the look of the current squad with stars like Paul Pogba, Edinson Cavani, and Jesse Lingard out of contract in the summer. Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial’s futures at the club also look bleak after their January loan moves.

Perhaps, fans would want the club to strengthen up front, given Mason Greenwood’s suspension and the ageing duo of Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani. A signing in defensive midfield would also make sense while a quality central defender may well be a wise acquisition as well.
