Transfer News: Manchester United are favourites to sign Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele
According to Spanish publication Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are the favourites to sign Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele this summer.
It is no secret that the Red Devils have been short of goals this season, with multiple games being drawn after the side failed to add to their slender deals. This problem was only aggravated last weekend after they failed to put a single goal past relegation-threatened Watford at home.
Dembele is out of contract in the summer and United would do well to snap up the forward for free. For a talent like his, getting the player without paying a ludicrous amount to Barcelona is amazing news for the Manchester club.
The World Cup winner has been linked with United for several seasons, but it is probably in 2022 that we finally see this happen. As things stand, he is set to leave Barcelona at the end of his current deal with the La Liga giants.
Attacking riches for United
The France international will link up with Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Anthony Elanga at Old Trafford if we manage to secure his services in the summer. With Rashford out of form and the latter pair only just finding their feet at the club, perhaps an attacker like Dembele could help us with scoring goals next season.
Despite being at the centre of a public contract feud in January with Barcelona, things seem to have worked out between the club and the player. In a massive transfer u-turn in the winter transfer window where the club declared their intention to sell him, Dembele stayed and fought for his spot in Xavi’s XI this season.
Goals have come far and few at United this season, and our current crop of forwards have not been able to address this issue. Despite having names like Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani in the squad, we have seen the former look out of touch in recent weeks while the latter has barely featured due to injuries.
Anyone watching our club this season would tell you that most of our creative outlets have been from out wide, with Sancho and Elanga providing the goods. Both have taken time to get going in United’s first team, but are flourishing at the moment.

Given this, a wide attacker like Dembele would only add to United’s attacking riches. There can be no doubting the forward’s talent, and he was last seen scoring a goal and picking up two assists for Barcelona the previous weekend, despite only coming on in the second half.
He looks like a new signing for manager Xavi Hernandez, and United will hope that he is our new signing next season. Hopefully, we do not see one more transfer u-turn from Dembele in the summer as we are said to be favourites to secure his services at the end of the campaign.
