Manchester United legend Roy Keane urges former club to sign Diego Simeone as permanent manager
According to the Mirror, Manchester United legend Roy Keane has advised his former club to go out and sign Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone as their next permanent manager in the summer.
The Red Devils have just returned from playing against Simeone’s team after earning a 1-1 draw away from home in the first leg of the Round of 16 of the Champions League. Atletico were far superior to the Manchester club for large periods of the game, but could not end the game with a win.
Keane, who won seven Premier League trophies with Man United, has now urged the Old Trafford side to chase Simeone as he believes the Argentine has the right qualities in him to take up the hot seat at the Theatre of Dreams.
“Maybe Simeone, he’s the right kind of character. He’s done great things. He’s a great character, a big personality. He doesn’t mess around with players. Maybe someone like him coming into the club, could work.”
United are in need of a permanent manager in the summer after the club sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer late last year, and appointed Ralf Rangnick to be the interim boss until the end of the current season. The German has done a decent job at steadying the ship until now, only losing once in the league.
Go and get him
The Manchester club have had very limited success in appointing managers that can win them trophies ever since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson. So far, only Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal have been able to bring silverware to the Theatre of Dreams, but neither lasted too long.
Keane was of the opinion that his former side should go out and get the manager they need and want, saying that if the club were capable of spending fortunes on players, they could do the same for managers as well.
“You go and get the manager you want. You pay fortunes for players, so why not a manager? I don’t care whose under contract, if you think he’s the right manager for Manchester United, well you go and get him.”
A big summer awaits Man United fans, as we prepare to welcome a new face to the club as our new permanent manager. The expectation that comes with a place in the dugout at Old Trafford is massive, and it has proven to be too much for others in the past.
Keane is no stranger to expectations and success at Old Trafford, with the former captain leading them to multiple titles under arguably the greatest manager of all time, Sir Alex Ferguson. However, that era of glory is long in the past, and the reality is that the Red Devils have not won a trophy since 2017.

For this reason, exactly, choosing the right person for the job is paramount. The club hierarchy will need to rack their heads and convince the best man available for the role of permanent manager, and ensure he is able to bring the glory days back.
Simeone is known for his defensive style of play, with workhorses and passionate players making up his lineup. With Man United known to be a club for their attacking DNA, it may not be the right fit, but if the Argentine is able to bring results, then it may not be a problem.
