Borussia Dortmund could sell Manuel Akanji next summer amidst Manchester United interest
According to the German news outlet SportBILD (h/t Sport Witness), Borussia Dortmund could contemplate selling Manuel Akanji amidst interest from Manchester United for a transfer next summer. He could be in line to depart Germany due to the differences regarding the terms of a potential new contract.
Akanji will enter the final year of his current deal at Signal Iduna Park at the end of this season. As such, Dortmund have started negotiations over a renewal but have failed to reach an agreement so far. He is demanding a wage package of €10million a year which has not gone down well with them even if they are keen on an extension.
Hence, the current situation could force BVB to sell the 26-year-old in the summer transfer window. It is claimed that they will consider a move for a fee of €25million so as not to lose him for free in the future. The chances of those demands getting accepted are less likely since Niklas Sule was given a €12million a year contract recently.
Summer opportunity?
If this situation continues to be the same in the coming months ahead of the summer transfer window, we could be in for a big chance to secure his services. He currently earns around €5million per year, which could explain the demands of such a raise.
That being said, it is still unsure whether the Swiss defender would demand similar wages if we make an official approach after this season. The Bundesliga side deemed the demands to be unreasonable since accepting those terms could put them in a tight spot with others in the squad.
But the Red Devils are simply at a higher level which makes the wages reasonable considering the Dortmund ace’s performances. In fact, Akanji has better stats with regards to defensive actions in comparison to our main centre-back trio of Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof.

Moreover, Ralf Rangnick could target Akanji after losing out on Sule, but it is still unsure whether Man United would accept the asking price or not. After all, the price tag can be considered expensive for someone who will have just one year left in his contract.
We could use a restructure in the backline as Phil Jones and Eric Bailly need to be moved out after this term. Only time will tell whether we will secure Akanji’s signature and add him to our squad for next season. But his dream of playing in the Premier League could provide us with more cards for a summer move.
