Transfer News: Manchester United target Youri Tielemans set to leave Leicester City
According to transfer news from Fabrizio Romano (h/t Fansided), Youri Tielemans has rejected the latest contract offered to him by Leicester City amid heavy interest from Manchester United.
On the other hand, Manchester United have had difficulties regarding the availability of some critical midfielders. Donny van de Beek and Nemanja Matic are not contributing to the team’s plans, and their stay in the club seems to be coming to an end. Paul Pogba has returned to the squad after a significant injury break, but his motivation to continue at Old Trafford is still covered in question marks.
Manchester United have been heavily linked with Youri Tielemans in recent times. And now, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that the Belgian star is not looking to continue with the Foxes by exceeding his current contract that ends in 2023.
Tielemans has recently developed into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League. The Belgian star helped the Foxes win the FA Cup against Chelsea last season and also played a massive role in the first half of this campaign. With six goals and three assists in 27 appearances across all competitions, he is one of the stand-out performers of Brendan Rodgers’ team.
If he maintains the stiff stance against a renewal deal, then Leicester City would be pushed to sell him next summer in order to avoid losing him for a decreased fee. In that case, the Red Devils can take advantage of the situation by pitching a suitable offer for the midfield star.
However, United are not alone in the race as it is believed that Real Madrid, Barcelona and several Premier League teams are also tracking the situation and hence, there would be massive competition even if Leicester agree to sell Tielemans in the summer.
Should United grab the deal?
Manchester United has struggled to put up goals despite having a world-class forward line. The poor service qualities from the midfield could be termed as one viable reason for that. Except for Bruno Fernandes, our midfielders have lacked creativity in the opponent’s half.

Tielemans could solve our problems, but our board have to show urgency in their attempt. The added competition could skyrocket his prices in the summer window, so our board should start preparing for an offer beforehand. It remains to be seen how our board approaches the situation.

Some would argue that Tielemans’ pace and workrate off the ball is poor for a central midfielder, but his skillset when in possession more than makes up for it. That being said, it wouldn’t do harm if our new manager- whoever that may be- can make the Belgian work on his defensive side of the game.
