Manchester United set to offer David de Gea a contract extension following recent showings
According to The Sun, Manchester United are ready to offer David de Gea a new contract following his recent run of good form in a season that has been largely disappointing for the club as a whole.
The 31-year-old’s career at Old Trafford appeared to be in the doldrums following last season’s Europa League final. However, he appears to have received a second wind and has since re-established himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper.
De Gea has been one of Man United’s best players this season. He has time and again bailed the Red Devils out and has revived his reputation as a reliable last line of defence. These performances have not gone unnoticed and the Red Devils hierarchy is keen to reward him.
Man United are prepared to trigger the 12-month extension in De Gea’s contract, assuring his future at the club until 2024. He will continue to earn around £375,000 a week and appears to be assured of his future at the club for at least the next two years.
The Red Devils will need to amend their policy of offering players over 30 lower wages on short-teams deals. De Gea is among the club’s top earners and in his defence, it is somewhat earned given the standout performances he has given of late.
de Gea 2024?
But goalkeepers tend to have a longer shelf life than some outfield players and de Gea has shown no signs of slowing down. In fact, he looks like he is performing at the same level as he was a few years during the peak years of his career at Old Trafford.
The 31-year-old has kept just seven clean sheets in 30 appearances across all competitions this season. It does not, however, reveal the complete picture and masks the key role he has played for Man United. In fact, it can be argued that he has single-handedly kept us in some important games, aiding us in the race for a top-four finish.
News of De Gea’s potential extension should be a hammer blow to Dean Henderson’s aspirations at the Theatre of Dreams. The Englishman is below the Spaniard in the pecking order and has been limited to appearances in cup competitions this season.
At 24, Henderson should be playing regularly- a luxury that he is unlikely to receive at Old Trafford. Whether he will stay put until 2024 to take over the reins or move elsewhere in the coming summer remains to be seen.
