Ralf Rangnick dismisses notion that Manchester United need a summer overhaul to challenge for the Premier League title
According to The Guardian, Manchester United interim-manager, Ralf Rangnick believes the club is not in need of a summer overhaul ahead of the 2022-23 campaign.
The Red Devils were dumped out of the FA Cup last Friday and unless they can go all the way in Europe, look set for a fifth straight trophyless season. Man United are currently 19 points behind league leaders, Manchester City but Rangnick believes there is no need for an overhaul in the summer transfer window.
As things stand, Man United are yet to win the Premier League since Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit in 2013. A nine-year run sans a single league title was unfathomable at that point in time but is now a reality. Rangnick for his part believes the team has performed well the last two weeks and it is a sign that major surgery is not needed within the squad.
“I don’t think so. Overall, the development of the team and its performances the last couple of weeks have improve.”
Despite the reversal against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup, Rangnick believes the performance on the night was adequate. The German isn’t far from the truth as the players created plenty of opportunities but failed to show their clinical side in the final third.
“We wasted too many clear-cut chances – we had 22 shots inside the box, 10 were massive opportunities, and we should easily have been 3-0 up at half-time. It should have been 6-1 or 6-2 by the end.”
While performances are well and good, it matters for little unless we can see the game out and get wins on the board. Given the setback, a reaction will be expected of the players when the club faces Burnley in the Premier League on Tuesday. Anything short of three points on the night would be a serious dent in our chances of securing a top-four finish.
Familiar faces return
Both Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani will return to the matchday squad after being allowed some time off last week. The latter’s ability in the box was sorely missed against Middlesbrough and his return is a welcome development.
As things stand, Man United need a near-perfect end to the season to secure a top-four finish. The remaining fixtures will certainly put Rangnick’s comments to the test. Just how we fare remains to be seen.

While a complete overhaul might not be needed at Old Trafford this summer, it is imperative that a few players will need to be brought in. Jesse Lingard and Paul Pogba will be out of contract in the summer and the club also lack a defensive midfielder who can take over from Nemanja Matic.
With Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw failing to impress and Mason Greenwood’s future unclear, it would be impossible for us not to dip into the market. Whether it is Rangnick taking the focus off what is needed or is trying to play down the work that is needed to be done at Old Trafford is debatable.
