Ralf Rangnick urges Jesse Lingard to decide on Manchester United future amidst Newcastle United links
Ralf Rangnick has advised Jesse Lingard to take a stance on his future at Manchester United amidst interest from Newcastle United for a potential transfer. There has been uncertainty regarding the attacking midfielder’s future after he has struggled to garner game time this season so far.
Lingard has a contract with the Red Devils, which will come to an end this summer. That has certainly added more fuel to the fire, with Newcastle having shown interest in taking him away to St. James’ Park. With just less than ten days left in the January transfer market, it would be interesting to see how this situation develops before the window closes.
Speaking in the pre-match presser (h/t Manchester United official website), Rangnick expressed that the Toons’ interest is unsurprising, to say the least, as it is a nod to the Englishman’s quality. The coach added that it is up to the midfielder to decide what happens next as he cannot guarantee minutes due to competition.
“It’s normal that other clubs like Newcastle show interest in him. I know his contract is expiring in the summer but the question is what does he want to do? Does he want to get more game-time from now on? Here at Manchester United, it is not so easy as we have other players who can also play in that position and we can’t change from one game to the other five or six positions. This is something that has to be done by the players and their agents themselves.”
Lingard to Newcastle this January?
Since the deadline date for the winter transfer window is on the horizon, the 29-year-old has to assess the current situation and give a clear stance to the manager. That would be in the best interest of all the parties as future plans can then be prepared with a potential departure in mind.
The German boss did say that he would be content if the England international ends up staying at Old Trafford for the rest of the season. Whether that outcome would happen or not would only be known in due time. But looking at the current situation, it might be best for us to facilitate a move for the star this month.
Supposedly, the Magpies made a second loan offer for the services of the Man United ace as they look to bolster their squad to survive relegation. The Manchester club is only interested in a permanent move but it acts against his interest since there is the risk of dropping to the Championship at the end of the season.
We have a good crop of players in the forward and attacking-midfield department, so it would not be too big of a deal if we facilitated a departure this January. Just like the England star, the club should make a reasonable decision since this might be our last opportunity to gain some sort of a fee for him, albeit it potentially being in the form of a loan move.

Lingard would have surely paid heed to what Rangnick has said above. If he cannot be guaranteed minutes at Old Trafford, it would surely hamper his chances of going to the FIFA World Cup later this year. On the other hand, a good spell away from Man United could make Gareth Southgate take note of his performances.
But as Rangnick said above, some things are down to the players and their agents to decide.
