Ralf Rangnick Playing Career (Club)

Ralf Rangnick had a short-lived playing career, and it wasn’t anything like the stature of his coaching career. He started his senior career with VfB Stuttgart II, and defensive Midfield was the position he chose to master. He mainly featured in German lower division clubs. However, he has a short experience playing in England when he played for Southwick while studying at Sussex.

Even though he wasn’t technically gifted he always had the enthusiasm for tactics and strategic perspectives in football. This unique gift helped him land his first managerial job. He served as a player-coach for a local club named Viktoria Backnang. VfB Stuttgart II also hired him to work as a player-coach later.

Ralf Rangnick Managerial career

Ralf Rangnick was destined to be a football coach, and he is known to be one of the revolutionaries of the modern game. The German manager earned fame by making the ‘Gegenpressing’ technique a success. The tactical term means a high-intensity pressing whereby a team aggressively tries to win back the ball immediately after losing it. In rather mainstream tactics or a defensive one as Diego Simeone uses, the player would try to regroup after losing the ball to close the spaces. But, ‘Gegenpressing’ is an aggressive attacking tactic, and it’s incredibly eye-pleasing for the fans. It comes with a risk, but that’s the thrill of playing it.

Ralf mastered the technique after being influenced by Ernst Happel, Valeriy Lobanovskyi, Arrigo Sacchi, and Zdeněk Zeman. On the other side of story he himself influenced top coaches of the modern era like Thomas Tuchel, Julian Nagelsmann, Ralph Hasenhüttl, and Jürgen Klopp.

Ralf started his managerial career in the 1980s as a player-coach of his local club Viktoria Backnang. He later served as a player-coach for two other clubs – VfB Stuttgart II and TSV Lippoldsweiler. It took him eight years to get his first head coach role at SC Korb. After two seasons, he returned to VfB Stuttgart, where he won the U-19 Bundesliga. Rangnick resumed his first-team work in 1995 by becoming the head coach at SSV Reutlingen 05. He spent the next four years mastering his skills at Ulm, with whom he won the Regionalliga Süd Championship in 1998.

Ralf then joined VfB Stuttgart in 1999 to start his career in the top flight of German football, Bundesliga. But it didn’t go well. Despite making the round of 16 of UEFA Cup 2000–01 after winning the UEFA Intertoto Cup, and the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal, Stuttgart failed in the league, and after the exit from the UEFA Cup, Ralf was sacked.

The following season, he took over the charge of Hannover 96, a 2. Bundesliga side in 2001. He worked his magic in the first season in charge and led his team into promotion. Hannover won the 2. Bundesliga and was promoted to Bundesliga after a 13-year absence. But his 3rd season wasn’t impressive enough, and he was fired from his post after a loss against Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2004.

After losing the job, he took the shot for a higher position, assistant manager for the German national team. But, eventually, Joachim Löw snatched the job. He took the reins at Schalke 04 in 2004. In his first season, he played European football and went till the group phase of the UEFA Cup but failed to win against Shakhtar Donetsk in the knock out phase. The following season he got entry to UEFA Champions League but could not go past the group stage. Their stand wasn’t good enough in the league, and they lost in DFB-Pokal to Eintracht Frankfurt. This obliged the club to sack him.

Ralf then took over the managerial position at Hoffenheim. He helped the team win promotion from Regionalliga Süd to 2. Bundesliga. in 2007–08, he again led the team to another promotion and this time, they achieved the ticket for Bundesliga. In 2011 he left the club agitated by the board’s decision to sell key player Luiz Gustavo to Bayern Munich without consulting him.

In March 2011, he returned to his old club Schalke 04. They did exceptionally well in the UCL and went to the semi-final after beating title-holder Inter by 7-3 on aggregate. Eventually, Manchester United beat them in Semis. In the following season, He left Schalke due to exhaustion.

Ralf then joined as a director of football for Red Bull Salzburg.  Ralf joined RB Leipzig in 2015 after leaving his post at RB Salzburg. He lead Leipzig into Bundesliga promotion. Later he left the job and again came back in 2018. In his second spell, he won his first domestic title, the German Cup, after beating Viktoria Köln. Ralf experienced a successful period at Leipzig, finishing 3rd in Bundesliga and earning qualification for the UEFA Champions League.

In the later years, he focused on his work as the director of football of Red Bull Salzburg and RB Leipzig. Recently, in 2021 he became the manager of sports and development for Russian Premier League club FC Lokomotiv Moscow.

But the recent news suggests he could be back in a managerial role as Manchester United are interested in bringing him as an interim manager for the remainder of the season.
