Transfer Update: Newcastle United ready to beat Manchester United in race to sign Julian Alvarez from River Plate
According to Gazzetta Dello Sport, via Sport Witness (h/t Daily Star), Newcastle United are ready to make a ‘super offer’ to River Plate ace Julian Alvarez amidst transfer interest from Manchester United.
The young striker has had two fine seasons with the Argentine club and is now on the radar of a host of European clubs. Man United are amongst them as they are looking to add reinforcements to their side.
Edinson Cavani is out of contract in the summer, while Anthony Martial could leave in January. Cristiano Ronaldo is set to turn 37 next month, while Mason Greenwood has impressed down the wings. Thus, the Red Devils could use an out-and-out strike option soon.

Alvarez is a good find, but Newcastle United are now ready to trump the Old Trafford outfit to his signature. The Toon Army is apparently set to make a ‘super offer’ to sign the player. The Argentine wonderkid has also garnered interest from Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan.
Could we beat the financial prowess of Newcastle?
The Northeast club has the richest owners in the world and is a financial powerhouse now. However, there is no telling how much they are willing to invest in Alvarez for the same. Moreover, Man United are no pushovers.
We are one of the biggest clubs in Europe, if not Europe and are one of the most successful football clubs in England. Massive names have come and gone at Old Trafford, and the prestige of playing at the Theatre of Dreams has often been enough to convince young talents to join the club.

In addition, Newcastle are currently battling relegation while we are in the Top 4 race. Moreover, given our squad strength coupled with the appointment of a permanent manager in the summer, we could be competing for the biggest titles again. Thus, we could offer several other prospects apart from a decent enough contract.

The end decision may well lie with the soon-to-be 22-year-old, but Man United would be wise to present him with a good project. Players like Alvarez do not come by every day, and his acquisition could benefit us for years to come, given his age and potential to become a world-beater.
Ronaldo isn’t going to play forever and neither is Edinson Cavani. These two have arguably been our main men up front since they joined us. It is time to plan beyond the duo’s potential departure- whenever that may be- and Alvarez could well be a useful signing in that regard.
