Ralf Rangnick could put faith in Dean Henderson as his first-choice goalkeeper at Manchester United.

Transfer News: Manchester United ace Dean Henderson denied January move by Ralf Rangnick

According to transfer news on Manchester Evening News, Ralf Rangnick is not allowing Dean Henderson to leave Manchester United in the January transfer window.

The 24-year-old ace has a contract until 2025 and is earning £120k-per-week at Old Trafford. However, he was told that he would start the season between the posts for his boyhood club. But after contracting the Covid-19 disease in pre-season, David de Gea was given the starting berth.

The Spaniard has since been mesmerizing and has justified his selection. Thus, Henderson is opting to leave the club mid-season. Ajax chief and former Man United goalkeeper, Edwin van der Sar, is a confirmed admirer of the player, and the club has expressed interest in sealing a loan move for the player until the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur are also eyeing a potential summer move for the Englishman since Hugo Lloris only has six months on his contract. But Rangnick has now denied the shot-stopper the opportunity to leave next month. The German boss is apparently keen on having three first-team ready goalkeepers in the squad. This has led to sources suggesting that some tension could be brewing beneath the surface due to this decision.

Problems on and off the pitch

There was a lot of hype around the arrival of Rangnick. The German thinker has been in the game for over three decades and has always had his teams play attractive football. However, fans are yet to witness the same while the problems off the pitch are also increasing.

Anthony Martial has already expressed his desire to leave, while Eric Bailly has regrets about signing a new deal. Henderson is the latest issue on the agenda. One can argue the case for both the player and the club but this is something the English international should have thought of before penning a contract until 2025.

Man United are well within their rights of asking the keeper to stay and fight for a starting spot. After all, we are likely to be competing in nearly three competitions by February. Moreover, if De Gea gets injured, Tom Heaton would be next-in-line if Henderson departs the club.

Regardless, Rangnick needs to find a way to pour water over a potential fire. It has only been a month since he took over the reins at the Theatre of Dreams, and if he wishes to maintain amicable relationships with players, it would be wise to take care of these problems carefully.

After all, one cannot rule out Henderson’s own personal desires. His eye could well be on the England berth when Gareth Southgate names his squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar next year.
