Dimitar Berbatov believes the situation surrounding Edinson Cavani at Manchester United is not fair
According to Betfair (h/t The Mirror), former Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov had admitted that the situation surrounding Edinson Cavani at Old Trafford is unfair.
The Uruguayan international joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2020 on a Bosman transfer. An excellent debut season in red saw the club offer him a one-year extension. Lightning however hasn’t struck twice and Cavani has e enjoyed a rather forgettable 2021/22 campaign with Man United.
A major reason for this has been the return of former Red Devils ace, Cristiano Ronaldo. One of the greatest players to ever play the game, the veteran’s arrival has seen Cavani drop down the pecking order.
This could with injuries have limited the 34-year-old to just 274 minutes of first-team action this season. He has made eight appearances, scoring just one goal. It is quite the drop for a player who ended last season as the first-choice striker.
Berbatov believes it was inevitable that the Uruguayan would be impacted given the return of Ronaldo. The Portuguese sensation usually demands the spotlight and has to his credit been our top scorer this season. Unfortunately, this has come at the cost of Cavani.
“When someone like Ronaldo comes into the club, he takes all the spotlight, he plays every game and in the world of football this happens.”
Berbatov goes on to add that while Cavani has been dealt an unfair hand, it isn’t something new. Such incidents happen in football and often one man’s glory comes at the expense of another’s a downfall.
“It’s not a fair situation because Cavani did so well for the team last season, he earned a new deal but Ronaldo has taken his place in the team. It’s not fair but this happens in football.”
A fresh beginning!
Despite being 34, Cavani still has a few years of football left in him. Berbatov believes the opportunity to gain regular football at another club say Barcelona would be too good for Cavani to pass on.
“With Cavani not playing at United it’s an easy decision.”
It is unfortunate that the Uruguayan’s stint at Old Trafford is coming to a rather unceremonious end. He certainly deserved better but then he has been an unwitting victim of Ronaldo’s homecoming.

Questions have to be asked of the club’s transfer policy that has caused this dilemma for Cavani. It makes little sense for Man United to have chased Ronaldo after Cavani had already committed to the club. Either way, former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should have shown better man management, to begin with.
