Transfer News: Manchester United target Julian Alvarez fails to rule out January exit from River Plate
Speaking to reporters, as quoted by The Metro, Julian Alvarez failed to rule an exit from River Plate in January amidst transfer interest from Manchester United.
The South American star has really come into his own this year. He scored 18 goals and provided seven assists in 21 games that helped River Plate win the league title. Understandably, there has been interest in the young striker, especially since he only has a year left on his contract.
Man United are amongst three other European giants interested in signing the Argentine international. They are also considering opening talks with the player’s representatives amidst a potential bid in January. The Red Devils are aware that he possesses a £17million release clause that shall rise to £21million in the final 10 days of the transfer window.
The player has now revealed his ambitions and has failed to rule out a winter move.
‘Frankly, I don’t know what will happen, now I’m only thinking about celebrating. In January, we will see. We all know how much the World Cup means for a player. When I make my decision, I’ll choose what’s best for me.’
January swoop for Julian Alvarez?
The striker made his debut for his national team in June as a substitute in a World Cup qualifying match against rivals Chile. He has since made four appearances and apparently remains keen to represent his country at the 2022 World Cup.
It’s no secret that playing in the Premier League will put him in the spotlight even more, given it is the most-watched league in the world. Man United could offer him the chance to do so by sealing a January move for him. Edinson Cavani could be heading for the exit door next month, as per Tyc Sports (h/t The Metro). Anthony Martial could also seal an exit. Both of them have struggled for game-time since the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho.
Thus, there could be a vacant spot for a deputy striker. Alvarez could very well fulfil that role or even play alongside Ronaldo. Ralf Rangnick is yet to completely evaluate his squad and work with a set system. The German is likely to rotate and experiment until he finds the right formula.

Moreover, the 21-year-old could add some freshness to the squad mid-season. We are still very much in contention to land a Top 4 spot and go deep into the UEFA Champions League. Man United could sign him on a free transfer in January 2023, but the competition could rise by then, courtesy of which, it is crucial to convince him to make the move next month.
The Premier League is a demanding league. Players who can make themselves a star in England often have bright international careers too. The sum being quoted isn’t exorbitant as well, and it seems like this potential move can only benefit all parties- except for perhaps River Plate, as they would lose a great young striker in the process.
