Manchester United keeping tabs on Chelsea star Antonio Rudiger
According to Football Insider (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United are monitoring the situation surrounding Antonio Rudiger as he is closing in on leaving Chelsea. The German is among the best defenders in the league and Man United have the chance to land him for a free.
Rudiger will see his contract with the Blues come to an end in the summer of 2022, meaning he could walk away for free and could deal a damning blow to his current club. It would also allow him to legally reach a pre-contract agreement with other clubs from January 1st.
The 28-year-old is annoyed by the offer from the West London club worth £140,000 per week and has grown frustrated by it. He is upset about Mason Mount being offered a larger salary package than him. Chelsea’s approach has not gone well with his representatives either.
Man United are eyeing another centre-back in the coming transfer windows and are keeping tabs on how Rudiger’s situation develops. They have suffered defensively even with the addition of Raphael Varane earlier this summer. Harry Maguire has looked like a shadow of his former self, prompting the club to look at alternatives.
Tough Ask
Even if we could try to sign the German defender, the chances of a possible move are far less likely. He has a lot of debt to Thomas Tuchel, who helped him turn around his fate at Stamford Bridge. He was on the fringes under Frank Lampard, and Tuchel supported him to reach this stage.
That, coupled with the fact that a move to a direct rival would always be tough to execute, could diminish our chances for a potential transfer. However, stranger things have happened in football before, and a move can never really get ruled out without reliable confirmation.

Should we sign the German international, he would instantly lift the quality of our defence and could even offer us the possibility of playing a three at the back system. However, Ralf Rangnick has opted for a 4-2-2-2 formation and it is unlikely that it would get changed for one single player.
Some would have doubts if the Chelsea star could adapt to a two centre-back formation, however, considering the quality that he has shown, betting on it could be a bad idea. Time will tell what lies in store for the Blues superstar as we edge closer to the January transfer window.
