Fabrizio Romano ruled out any interest from Manchester United for Frenkie de Jong
According to Fabrizio Romano (h/t TheSportReview), Manchester United haven’t made any approaches to sign Frenkie de Jong, and any January deal appears improbable.
The Dutchman hasn’t lived up to his price tag at FC Barcelona and appears a shadow of the player he was expected to be. Even though the 24-year-old midfielder has shown some excellent performances in recent seasons, he has failed to make a significant impact on the Catalan club.
The Netherland international has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent times. But transfer expert Fabrizio Romano suggests that such a January move is implausible as the Red Devils haven’t approached the Barcelona board to discuss the possible move.
“There are a lot of rumours about Manchester United, but at the moment, there is nothing going on with Manchester United. Nothing is expected to happen in the January transfer window for Frenkie De Jong.”
The Italian football journalist added that the Red Devils are explicitly looking for a defensive midfielder at this moment and they don’t have any plans to lure an attacking-minded midfielder like De Jong as they already have an abundance of choices in the ranks.
Barcelona are still struggling to cope up with the departure of Lionel Messi in the summer. De Jong, however, hasn’t given any stellar performances this season. The player has only managed to bag one goal and two assists in 19 appearances across all competition in the current campaign.
Manchester United currently have a lot of options in the position. Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Donny van de Beek are all proven talents and can make a difference on their day. Of course, matters could change in the summer when the likes of Pogba could decide to move on.

It seems new manager Ralf Rangnick has found out of favour dutch midfielder Donny van de Beek to be useful, and thus United has decided not to sell him in January. Therefore, the Red Devils’ interest in De Jong looks untrue given the fact that some good midfielders inside the team are still struggling to get game time.
whether the situation will change in the future remains to be seen.
