Ralf Rangnick claimed Manchester United were sloppy in the 1-1 draw against BSC Young Boys
Speaking to BT Sport after the game, as quoted by The Express, Ralf Rangnick claimed Manchester United were sloppy in their 1-1 draw against BSC Young Boys.
The German boss took charge of his first European game for the 3-time champions of the tournament. Fortunately for him, this match did not matter all that much as the Red Devils were guaranteed top spot in their UCL group courtesy of a win against Villarreal on matchday 5.
Thus, Rangnick handed out chances to the youngsters and the fringe stars. Mason Greenwood took his chance as he scored acrobatically after just 10 minutes. It felt like the goals would keep on coming from there on in, but instead, the Swiss champions equalized before the end of the first half.
The game ended 1-1, and the gaffer expressed his disappointment over his team’s sloppy performance on the night.
“We should have been 2 if not 3-0 up. We had two great opportunities from Amad and Juan Mata. We were a bit sloppy in these situations. We had a third one from Elanga in the second half.
“We were not defending high enough, not proactive enough. We also could have conceded two or three goals. If the final score was 3-3 or 4-3 to us no one could have complained.”
Demanding boss
This was perhaps what was lacking from the previous management. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was overly optimistic at times and looked at the positives rather than wondering what his team could have done better. Rangnick has been around long enough to know that one can always improve.
To his credit, he was right. Amad Diallo looked confident on the ball, as did goal-scorer Greenwood. Luke Shaw also looked comfortable engaging in duels after his head concussion kept him out for several weeks.
Eric Bailly was commanding the backline alongside Nemanja Matic. Youngsters Shola Shoretire and Teden Mengi also appeared confident in their abilities. The awareness in defence could have been better, but the Red Devils had created enough chances to win the game.

The result on the night did not matter, but it could from here on in. The Old Trafford outfit stands a good chance of finishing in the Top 4, and their new boss is going to demand the best out of his players. It is a new era, and the challenges are going to be harder now.
And for the players that took the field yesterday night, this serves as a good learning curve. The German is not opposed to giving youngsters a chance and games such as the one against Young Boys matter in that regard.
