David de Gea says he is “confident and strong” after winning the November POTM Award

David de Gea has had strong performances in November, which has seen him win the Manchester United POTM Award beating Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho in the votes. He won the award for the first time since February 2018, when he played at his very best while carrying the team from the back.

The 31-year-old has featured in 20 games this season and has four clean sheets in the process. The keeper has conceded 31 goals in that period, although that wasn’t all down to him due to our poor form as a team under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Speaking in an interview with the club’s media (h/t Manchester United official website), de Gea revealed that he felt very confident and strong since the beginning of the season. He is delighted to help the team and has thanked the fans for voting him to win the Player of the Month award.

Manchester United ace David de Gea was excellent in November.

“I’m here just to help the team. I try to make saves in the important moments. This is why I’m here, to help the team. At the moment, I’m doing well and helping the team. This is my job. To be honest, I’ve been feeling very good since the beginning of the season; very confident and very strong in mind.”

“So, yeah, I’m really happy with the award, of course. Thanks to the fans. Of course, it’s been a difficult few weeks in the club but the last results have been great for us. So let’s keep pushing and keep trying our best.”

Back to his best?

The Spaniard was consistent throughout last month, even in games where we got beaten badly. He had moments when he deserved criticism, for example, the Bernardo Silva goal that he let in during the Manchester derby. However, even with the mistake, he was pretty good on the day as he kept the scoreline respectable.

The Red Devils goalkeeper’s penalty record hasn’t been the best in the world but he saved two penalties against Watford and kept us in the match. Arguably, his best performance came against Villarreal in the Champions League, which helped us qualify for the knockout stages with a game to spare in the group stages.

The Spain international would need to keep this up and reach the peaks again to help us turn around this season. His form could play a crucial role if we want to get into the top four and challenge for other titles. And who knows, we could extinguish the trophy drought with enough improvements under Ralf Rangnick.

But this would be a dagger to Dean Henderson’s chances of displacing the Spaniard anytime soon. The England international may well have to settle for a role on the bench for a while.
