Roberto Mancini emerges as a candidate for the Manchester United permanent manager’s role
According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), the Manchester United board is considering offering the head managerial role to Roberto Mancini in the following summer.
The Red Devils sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjær approximately last month but have put off picking a permanent replacement right now. Among those in the fray is the Italian manager who led the Azzurri to UEFA Euro 2020 earlier this year.
Former assistant manager Michael Carrick is working as the caretaker manager until newly appointed interim manager Ralf Rangnick takes over. The German manager would only take charge of this season and turn to an executive role from next season. So, the hunt for a permanent manager is still on for the Manchester-based team.
There a quite a few candidates linked with the post in recent weeks. It is believed that Roberto Mancini has also emerged as a ‘wild card candidate’ for the role. However, it’s the most surprising name on the list given his history with bitter rivals Manchester City.
The 57-year-old manager recently led the Italian national team to the EURO 2020 triumph. He has been influential in rejuvenating Italian football and achieving the turnaround after not making it to the World Cup 2018.
Italy now finds themselves in a very tricky situation after finishing second in the qualification round. They would have to win the Playoffs in order to progress. But failing to do so would boost the United board’s intention to land the Italian.
Manchester United currently stands on a fine thread. The last few weeks have been eventful for the club, and any more disruption could cost Manchester United the title and top-four spot.
The arrival of Ralf Rangnick, a.k.a ‘the professor’, has somehow restored the hopes. However, the team is far away from becoming a severe threat to title contenders, and much work would be needed to restore the balance.

On the other hand, Mancini has proved his excellence in Premier League and with the Italy national team. He was the manager to break City’s title drought in 2011, something that saw them establish themself as a top side. Rivalry apart, he could be an excellent candidate for the job given his experience and expertise.
