Transfer News: Manchester United suffer a drawback in pursuit of Inter Milan midfielder Marcelo Brozovic
In conversation with Sky Italia (h/t Sports Mole), Inter Milan CEO Giuseppe Marotta believes that Manchester United target Marcelo Brozovic could sign a new long-term contract with the Serie A club soon.
The 29-year-old midfielder has only a little over seven months left in his existing contract with the Milan outfit. The Red Devils are one of the top clubs that have shown their interest in signing the Croatian professional footballer next summer. Brozovic has been a resolute figure in the middle of the pitch for the Nerazzurri and has impressed more often than not.
He has played 260 matches across all competitions during which time he has scored 26 goals and provided 35 assists for Inter Milan. Brozovic was a part of the Inter side that lifted the Serie A title after a span of 11 years under the tutelage of Antonio Conte last season.
The former GNK Dinamo Zagreb midfielder played an instrumental role in the title-winning campaign for the Nerazzurri last season, playing all but five matches. Despite their achievements on the pitch, the defending Italian champions suffered losses of €245.6 million (£211 million) for the 2020-21 financial year which has put them in a worrying position.
Marotta, however, confidently spoke about being able to tie down the rest of the core players in the squad for the long term. This includes Brozovic.
“Inter have a history of success, players understand this and I am optimistic about the renewals. We managed to find agreements with Barella and Lautaro and we will continue with the rest.”
The Red Devils have opted to use a 4-2-3-1 formation for the majority of their 2021/22 campaign. Former manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was especially partial to the double pivot of Fred and Scott McTominay. The duo has received a fair amount of backlash in recent times due to the brittle defensive setup that has been leaking goals throughout the season.
The required upgrade?
The Brazilian midfielder has especially received a lot of criticism for his inconsistency in the middle of the pitch. Brozovic would be a great acquisition and is a solid defensive midfielder who could really help Man United create a stable defensive foundation. A good offer for the services of the midfielder combined with their recent financial woes could maybe tempt Inter to part ways with the star man.
The Croatian international could help Man United plug a scathing gap in the middle of the pitch. The Theatre of Dreams is not the fortress that it used to be at one point in time. The Red Devils have suffered stinging defeats in recent weeks and the club could be looking for a defensive midfielder who could help anchor the ship at the back.

At 29, Brozovic has great experience and could still prove to be a great asset in the years to come. At the moment it doesn’t seem likely that the Croatian midfielder would make his way to Old Trafford. Manchester United should still be looking to add some reinforcements in that area. The January transfer window could be a great place to do that as the club would be looking for a sturdier alternative as compared to their current options in the middle of the park.
