Peter Schmeichel has backed Steve Bruce to take over the managerial role at Manchester United
In conversation with CBS (h/t Metro), Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel namedropped Steve Bruce as a great option to take over the managerial duties on an interim basis at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have had to face tough times recently. The sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer means that Michael Carrick is now caretaker manager for the Manchester-based club on a match-to-match basis. He had a good start to life in the hot seat, leading the club to a 0-2 victory over Villarreal CF in their latest UEFA Champions League tie courtesy of strikes from Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The likes of Laurent Blanc, Ralf Rangnick, and Mark Hughes have been linked with the role of the interim manager at Old Trafford. Former Barcelona boss, Ernesto Valverde is the latest name to join the list.
It is believed that Manchester United are pursuing Mauricio Pochettino as their top target to land the role on a permanent basis but the Red Devils would have a better chance of doing so at the end of the season. Schmeichel is of the opinion that former Newcastle United manager Steve Bruce would be a great candidate to take up the position on a temporary basis at Old Trafford.
The former Man United goalkeeper shared his thoughts on the current situation with the Manchester-based club and believes that someone with a great understanding of the club should be given the role of interim manager. A former skipper, Bruce is well aware of what it takes to make the club the biggest in the land.
‘You have to take small steps, you can’t just jump straight in and say we are going to play a pressing game. You can’t do that, the first thing you have to do is give confidence to everybody in the team. I just like the idea, if it is an interim, get somebody who knows the club. Get somebody who is known by the club as well. Somebody like Steve Bruce, that would be fantastic.’
The 60-year-old manager has extensive experience in the Premier League. His previous stint with Newcastle United may not have been the most memorable one but his expertise in the top flight of English football could help him at the moment. He may not have as much experience at the elite level as the majority of names that have been linked with the role of the interim manager at Manchester United.
While it may not be the worst thing to give Bruce a shot in the role on a temporary basis, the club should certainly look out for better options. The plethora of world-renowned players at Old Trafford would also require someone who knows how to navigate them and help them perform better as a team.
Bruce might get the United way of doing things, but it ultimately did Ole Gunnar Solskjaer little good at Old Trafford. The fact that Bruce is also currently unemployed showcases his aptitude as a manager.

It is also true that the 60-year-old manager does not have a major trophy to his name but then not many top-class managers would want to be associated with a role that is only temporary. While Manchester United could certainly do better than bringing in Steve Bruce what will be left to see is whether they can actually convince any of them to take up the role on a teamporary basis.
