Manager News: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rejected chief’s help to solve ‘too British’ problem
According to ESPN (h/t Express), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rejected Manchester United chief Ed Woodward’s help to solve the mainstream method implemented by the coaching hierarchy before being sacked.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was relieved of his duties today after a horrendous start to the season. His tactics were a centre of criticisms for quite some time. Despite having a robust lineup and recent transfer enforcements, he couldn’t make Manchester United a title contender.
The Red Devils’ performance suffered a severe drop in quality as they faced losses against small teams. The loopholes became evident that eventually led to the sacking. But it seems the Manchester United chief Ed Woodward knew about the structural problem in the coaching method and even offered help to correct it.
Mike Phelan, Kieran McKenna and Michael Carrick helped the former Manchester United player to devise the coaching plan. But the players weren’t entirely convinced, and there was a growing concern over the coaching method that the 48-year-old manager and his staff laid out.
It is believed that the players pointed out the methods as ‘too British’, which lacked the evolved systems of the modern game.
After becoming aware of the situation, Ed Woodward offered the Norweigian manager ‘whatever he wanted’ to enhance the coaching setup.
However, the former Molde manager rejected such help claiming that there has not been any quality drop in the coaching hierarchy as he poses a team of ‘world class’ staff.

Eventually, it couldn’t do any help to Solskjaer’s on-field tactics. In his last game in charge, the Red Redivls lost to 16th-placed Watford by a humiliating 4-1 scoreline. And that had been a pattern this season where a few late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and co masked the problems that were billowing the club for quite some time now.
