Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay is set to miss the next FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifier for Scotland against Denmark
In conversation with Steve Clarke ahead of the next FIFA 2022 World Cup Qualifier (h/t Manchester Evening News), Manchester United ace Scott McTominay is unavailable for Scotland in their fixture against Denmark.
The 24-year-old midfielder contracted a throat virus and was also forced to sit out their last qualifier against Moldova. The Scotland international has been an instrumental part of the national squad recently. McTominay has made 28 appearances across all competitions for Scotland.
The 24-year-old has also cemented his place in the Manchester United midfield. He has played a great part and would be missed greatly by Clarke. The good news is that The Scottish team have already qualified for the play-off stages of the Qualifiers.
The 58-year-old manager spoke about the Manchester United midfielder and ruled him out for the fixture against Denmark on Monday:
“Scott is definitely out. Scott hasn’t recovered enough from his virus. Scott hasn’t recovered enough from his virus.”
The Danish team are one of the strongest sides in the group and the unavailability of the 24-year-old midfielder could be a big disadvantage for the Scotland national team. Steve Clarke’s men would be looking to make their first World Cup appearance since France in 1998.
McTominay has had to endure a tough start this season as the fragility at the back has been highlighted on several occasions in the recent past. The Red Devils have not been able to perform on a consistent basis recently and the international break could provide some kind of respite for some of their star players like Harry Maguire and Fred who have had favourable results with their respective national squads.
