Manchester United fringe star Dean Henderson eyeing exit if he cannot dethrone David de Gea amidst Newcastle United interest
According to the Daily Mail (h/t The Sun), Dean Henderson wants to leave Manchester United if he cannot dethrone David de Gea amidst transfer interest from Newcastle United.
The 24-year-old had an excellent 2019/20 season at Sheffield United and was recalled last season. The shot-stopper gave considerable competition to David de Gea but only managed 26 appearances across all competitions.
He was set to compete actively for a starting spot again this season but suffered Covid-19 during pre-season. It took him longer than expected to completely recover from the disease and regain his match fitness.
He appeared in a couple of U-23 games in September. Henderson made it into the squad for the game against Everton at the start of October, but has failed to start a single game since then.
De Gea has been mesmerizing at times this season and has bailed the club out several times. Thus, the Englishman has now taken actions into his own hands.
It is thought that he shall leave Old Trafford if he cannot dethrone his Spanish teammate for the starting spot. The shot-stopper wants to be included in the England squad for the 2022 World Cup, but he might need consistent minutes on the pitch to earn it.

Newcastle United are ready to offer the player an escape route and swoop him up. However, Solskjaer might not let his star man leave mid-season. The club staff want to keep Henderson around if there is a dip in the form of their No 1.
Moreover, any transfer for the player will not come cheap. The English international signed a four-and-a-half-year contract last August worth £120,000-per-week. Thus, in addition to United not letting him leave in January, they could command a hefty price if and when they do choose to let him go.
