Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani was closely followed by Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the summer transfer window
According to El Nacional (h/t Liverpool Echo), Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani was closely followed by Jurgen Klopp in the summer transfer window.
Edinson Cavani came on a free transfer to Manchester United last year and performed up to his stature. He scored 17 goals and provided six assists in 39 games for the Red Devils. Furthermore, He showed an unbelievable work rate and professionalism.
Though he was performing on the pitch without any hesitations, he wanted to leave United off the pitch. It is believed that he was keen on making a move away from Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team until the last day of the summer transfer window.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is seemingly an admirer of the Uruguayan considering he wanted to bring Cavani to the Merseyside team to fill gaps in his squad.
The Reds constantly depended on their main forward, Roberto Firmino, throughout the last few seasons. Though the Brazilian had the help from two of the most lethal goalscorers in the league, his form remained volatile for the past few seasons.
The German manager wanted to incorporate Cavani in his squad to build a team with greater depth. Liverpool has a busy schedule going forward, and Jurgen Klopp would have used the experience of such a veteran player.
It seems that Catalan club FC Barcelona were also keen on luring the former Paris Saint-German player to their squad. However, the United board decided to keep the 34-year-old player and ruled out any possibility for a transfer in that window.
This season, Cavani’s performance took a hit due to several short term injury issues. He only started two games under the Norweigian manager and scored one goal in 5 games. Additionally, the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo has reduced his game time as well and a move next year could well be a realistic possibility.
