Transfer News: Palmeiras interested in signing Manchester United star Edinson Cavani

According to journalist Jorge Nicola (h/t The Express), Palmeiras have a chance of landing the signature of Manchester United star Edinson Cavani next summer.

The Uruguayan spent seven seasons at Paris Saint-Germain before making the switch to the Premier League with the Red Devils last season. One of the most feared strikers in Europe, it took some time for Cavani to adjust to the league before he started scoring for fun.

His performances helped the club finish 2nd in the Premier League last season and ensured a spot in the final of the UEFA Europa League. It was thought at the time that the 34-year-old would then return to his home continent and sign for Boca Juniors, especially since he only had a one-year contract with United.

However, he instead signed a one-year contract extension and remained at Old Trafford. It felt like game-time was going to be an issue for the centre-forward while injuries have played their own part in keeping the former PSG man out of the starting line-up this season.

But the striker came back into action last month and displayed his effectiveness in a front two with Cristiano Ronaldo against Tottenham Hotspur. Although he was benched in the mid-week fixture, it was viewed as managing his fitness.

Hence, it is certainly a partnership that can work, but Cavani could be out of the club soon as Palmeiras are targeting a deal for him. The Uruguayan club recently appointed Leila Pereira as the new president, who is expected to pump big money into the club.

A January move is out of the question, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would not want one of his main men to leave mid-season. However, given his lethal nature in front of goal, he could be an asset to the club for a couple more years.

But with the Brazilian club willing to bring the striker back to South America, only time will tell where the player will play his football next season.
