Manchester United suffer Raphael Varane set-back as defender set to be out for several games after pickin up injury against Atalanta
According to the club’s official statement (h/t The Sun), Manchester United star Raphael Varane is set to be out of action for a month due to injury after being taken off against Atalanta.
The French international has had a start-stop career at the Old Trafford outfit. He featured first against Wolves at the end of August and was looking to form a partnership with Harry Maguire. However, those plans fell down the drain after the Englishman picked up an injury.
Later, while it looked like Maguire was set to return, Varane suffered a thigh problem during the international break last month. However, he returned for the victory against Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend and looked commendable in a back three.
Unfortunately, the former Real Madrid man suffered a hamstring issue against Atalanta and was brought off after 38 minutes. United have now confirmed that the defender is set to be out of action for a month. A club statement read (h/t The Sun):
“The club confirms that Raphael sustained a hamstring injury, which is expected to keep him out of action for around a month. The centre-back was withdrawn during the first half of the game in Bergamo, with Atalanta leading 1-0.
“He was replaced by Mason Greenwood, and the Reds went on to secure a valuable point against the Serie A side courtesy of a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo.”

This is a huge blow for the Red Devils, especially after Victor Lindelof also failed to travel with the squad to Bergamo. Although Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has managed favourable results against Spurs and Atalanta, the big game against Man City is yet to come.
Moreover, the Old Trafford outfit are still to qualify for the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League and their tie against Villarreal post the international break is a crucial outing. Thus, it will be down to Solskjaer now to find a system that suits the strengths of the squad that is fit to feature in the coming weeks.
