Manchester United hoping to appoint Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone amidst calls to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
According to The Independent (h/t The Express), Manchester United have ‘long favoured’ the appointment of Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone amidst calls to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
There is widespread uncertainty over who will become the new manager at Old Trafford if the club decides to go ahead with sacking Solskjaer. The Norwegian has been entrusted to manage the upcoming games, but an abrupt decision could be made during the international break if the results in the next week do not favour the 48-year-old.
Antonio Conte is said to be the favourite to land the job, although there have been premature links to former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino, who is currently plying his trade at Paris Saint-Germain.
However, the board have apparently long favoured a move for Atletico boss Diego Simeone. The Argentinian has been one of the standout managers in European football for the last decade, thanks to his enthusiastic, pragmatic, and action-packed teams.
The 51-year-old led the Spanish outfit to their second La Liga title in the last seven years, while he has also led the club to two Champions League finals and a couple of Europa League triumphs.
This is also not the first time the Red Devils are thinking about appointing him, as they tried to orchestrate a move for him in 2014 after they sacked David Moyes. Simeone was also thought to be learning English from a private teacher, which fuelled up the links.

However, after the La Liga club lost the 2014 UCL final to Real Madrid, the former Argentinian international decided to stay at the club, where he is now committed until 2025.
It is also said that luring him out of the Spanish capital would be ‘impossible’ now. Thus, while the interest exists, it does not look like Solskjaer will be replaced by the Atletico manager.
