Manchester United star Raphael Varane ruled out for upcoming weeks with a groin injury
As confirmed by the club’s official site, Manchester United will have to make do without Raphael Varane for the next few weeks.
The French international suffered a groin muscle injury in his country’s UEFA Nations League final clash against Spain. While Les Bleus may have won the tournament, the 28-year-old came out of the tie worse for wear an d the club have released an official statement regarding his injury status.
“Raphael Varane sustained a groin muscle injury in the UEFA Nations League final and has commenced rehabilitation at the club. He will be out for a few weeks.”
Varane has already begun his rehabilitation at the club and will hopefully return sooner than later. His injury comes as a blow given the key games we have coming up.
Injury blow for Man United
As things stand, the Frenchman looks set to miss Saturday’s trip to Leicester City in the Premier League, the midweek visit of Italian giants Atalanta in the Champions League and even the blockbuster clash with Liverpool on October 24.
To add to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s woes, skipper Harry Maguire is already out injured. The Red Devils now have to negotiate through a banana skin set of fixtures sans their first-choice centre-back pairing.
Given the frailties we have shown at the back, Varane’s injury could not have come at a worse time. Hopefully, those around him step up and take their opportunity.
With both Maguire and Varane out, the onus will now fall on Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly. While both players are capable defenders in their own right, there is a reason why they are only the third and fourth choice options. Hopefully, they rise to the challenge and make themselves count.
