Gus Poyet backs Edinson Cavani to leave Manchester United in January
According to talkSport (h/t The Metro), former Premier League star Gus Poyet has backed Edinson Cavani to call it quits at Manchester United in the upcoming January transfer window.
The veteran striker enjoyed an excellent debut season in red last time around. He ended the campaign with 17 goals and six assists in 39 games. It is a testament to his ability that he was the club’s go-to striker towards the business end of the season.
The same cannot be said of him this time around. Cavani has been limited to just four appearances and has seen Cristiano Ronaldo overtake him as the primary man upfront. Poyet believes this drop in eminence could force the Uruguayan out of Old Trafford.
“Maybe he should move in January.”
“He was unlucky, because without Ronaldo coming in, he was playing as the main striker.”
Poyet goes on to add that the loser of the triple threat between Juventus, Manchester City and Manchester United was undoubtedly just one man-Cavani. The former Tottenham Hotspur star’s assumption may not be off the mark given how the United ace has fared for Uruguay.
Predominantly a regular, the 34-year-old has had to settle for a place on the bench for the South American side twice in recent days. Whether this has anything to do with his fall from grace at Old Trafford remains to be seen.
Poyet admits that had he been in Cavani’s shoes, he would consider his future at the club.
‘If I was him, seeing how things are now, and seeing him not getting to 90 minutes for the national team because he’s not playing – maybe”
Are United ready to sacrifice Cavani for the sake of Ronaldo?
Despite being 34, Cavani remains a potent player and still has a role to play at United this season. There are few who can boast of his ability at the age he is at and is an excellent player to bring off the bench.
Whether he is happy to play second fiddle and bide his time for an opportunity remains to be seen. Having achieved what he has in his career, there is little for Cavani to prove.
