John Murtough claims Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is part of the long-term strategy at Manchester United

Speaking to a fans forum (h/t The Sun), Manchester United director of football John Murtough has backed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to stay as head coach despite sack calls.

The Old Trafford outfit were in pole position in mid-September to top the Premier League table before the international break in October. However, things have changed horrendously since the club played against Newcastle United.

Although they won the game against West Ham, they needed a David de Gea penalty save in the last minute to ensure all three points. This was followed up by a loss against Aston Villa at Old Trafford, while Everton also picked up a point at the theatre of dreams last weekend.

To top this off, United are scraping their way through their Champions League group and have also been knocked out of the EFL Cup. There has been a lot of commotion regarding Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tactics due to this, and whether he should stay as manager. However, director of football John Murtough has now come out and publicly backed the Norwegian.

Murtough told a fans forum (h/t The Sun):

“We have a long-term strategy and confidence in the direction that we’re going. We believe that we’ve got the talent and the character within the squad to succeed. We need to keep control, not get carried away, and don’t deviate from our plan. Ole and the staff are very focused on that.

“We won’t get distracted by what’s said on social media, which can sometimes create fervour and hysteria. It’s part of the modern game, but we stay focused. The Premier League is one of most competitive leagues in the world.”

Thus, there is a very realistic and practical approach at the club. It is still early doors, and perhaps it is too soon to call for the manager’s head, especially when they are only two points off the top of the league table.

Alternatively, things could also change soon if the bad results continue post the international break as United are set to play 6 games in 20 days.
