Transfer News: Manchester United can miss out on Denis Zakaria because of Jose Mourinho
According to Fabrizio Romano (h/t United in Focus), Manchester United transfer target Denis Zakaria is on the radar of Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma.
The Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder has been linked to the Red Devils recently by German outlet BILD (h/t United in Focus) as the search for a defensive midfielder continues.
There is a clear void in defensive midfield that Fred and Nemanja Matic cannot quite fill right now. Scott McTominay is a bullish presence but he needs a quality midfielder by his side.
Zakaria could be that player if United were to sign him. The 24-year-old Switzerland international is in the last year of his contract and could be available on a free transfer next summer if he doesn’t renew his contract.
Zakaria on Mourinho’s radar
But Romano (h/t United in Focus) now claims that AS Roma are planning a January swoop for the defensive midfielder.
Jose Mourinho was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in April and took over the Serie A club this summer. The Portuguese manager famously managed United for a few years and is the last manager to win silverware at the club.
And now, the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan boss can land a significant blow to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer if he manages to bring Zakaria to Rome. The Norwegian boss is already enduring a rough patch right now.

Despite a big summer, United have failed to impress and critics have been quick to point towards United’s lack of a defensive midfielder. Whether the club fills that hole in the middle of the park with Zakaria or someone else remains to be seen.
