Edinson Cavani has struggled for minutes this season at Manchester United and Uruguay.

Manchester United first-team star Edinson Cavani displeased at missing international duty with Uruguay

As quoted by The Fresno Bee (h/t Manchester Evening News), Edinson Cavani has voiced his displeasure over staying at Manchester United at the cost of missing international duty with Uruguay.

The Premier League put out a unanimous statement earlier this summer that they would not allow those players to travel for international duty who will be travelling to ‘red list countries for their respective games.

This is because the players who will return from said countries will have to quarantine for a minimum of 10 days, according to the UK guidelines.

The Uruguayan was supposed to travel for international duty as the South American nation had their World Cup qualifiers against Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. However, had he been allowed to leave it would entail that Cavani would miss up to 2 Premier League games and an important UEFA Champions League clash against Young Boys.

The 34-year-old expressed his unhappiness with the situation. He said, as quoted by The Fresno Bee (h/t Manchester Evening News):

“We are exposed to decisions that are made in the organisations of some tournaments and leagues, and any of the two decisions [traveling or not] would be bad for us. We don’t get rich playing for our national teams. We have a commitment with ourselves and a moral commitment to defend our country. We don’t get rich by wearing the shirt of our national teams”.

The Uruguayan returned to Manchester United training a little late this season due to his commitments with the country at the Copa America and is yet to start a game for the club.

Despite being disallowed to leave for international duty, the 34-year-old would now have to place his focus to fight for a place in the starting lineup after the club’s recent acquisition of Cristiano Ronaldo.
