Paul Robinson is very surprised that Manchester United failed to sign Saul Niguez this summer
According to an interview done on Football Insider (h/t The Metro), Paul Robinson has explained how Manchester United have missed out on the ‘deal of the window’ by not signing Saul Niguez.
The Red Devils, who signed the likes of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane & Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, had a terrific transfer window as they have added three players who could fit straight into their starting line-up.
However, former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson believes that United missed out on the deal of the window by failing to strengthen in the midfield area. The Old Trafford outfit were linked with Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez, but a deal failed to materialize for the same.
Rivals Chelsea signed the 26-year-old Spaniard on a loan deal with an option to buy on deadline day. Robinson talked about the situation to Football Insider (h/t The Metro), saying:
“Chelsea have pulled off the deal of the window in Saul Niguez because he is a world-class player. I am very surprised that Man United didn’t push harder for him. They could really do with a player like him”.
“£34million with a small loan fee to start with? That is the deal of the window by a long way, and I think United have missed out”.
Although United do possess the likes of Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes, Donny van de Beek, Nemanja Matic, Scott McTominay, and Fred in their midfield line, another midfielder such as Saul would have boosted the quality in their ranks.

There is no certainty over the future of Pogba while Scott McTominay has also been sidelined with an injury. Given that Saul had just won the La Liga with Atletico Madrid and that he has a lot of Champions League experience, he could have been a useful asset to the Red Devils this season.
However, only time will tell whether United’s current lot of midfielders will be enough to bring in some silverware this year.
