Angel Di Maria blames Louis van Gaal for his failure at Manchester United
According to TyC Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), Angel Di Maria has launched an attack on Manchester United and former manager, Louis van Gaal, for his difficult spell in England.
The Red Devils signed the Argentine international in 2014 and much was expected of him at Old Trafford. While he had his moments, Di Maria struggled to impose himself on the field and was ultimately deemed a failure.
He lasted just one season at Old Trafford and was sold the very next summer to Paris Saint-Germain. Di Maria made 32 appearances for the Red Devils, scoring four times and making 12 assists.
It is clear that there was much optimism regarding Di Maria’s prospects at United. The club, in fact, handed him the legendary number seven jersey. The iconic number was worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, George Best, Eric Cantona among others.
Di Maria has opened a can of worms by claiming that he does not particularly care at being afforded the honour. In his own words, it was just a shirt for him and nothing more.
“I didn’t give a f**k about the Manchester United No. 7. At first they talked to me a lot about it, it was just a shirt.”
Di Maria also spared special criticism for van Gaal. The Dutchman was brought in to rebuild the club following David Moyes’s sacking but had a difficult time of it himself. Di Maria has hinted that van Gaal’s ego played a role in his own struggles at Old Trafford.
“My problem at Manchester was the coach. Van Gaal was the worst of my career. I would score, assist, and the next day he would show me my misplaced passes. He displaced me from one day to the other, he didn’t like players being more than him.”
While van Gaal wasn’t without his faults, it is immature to blame just the manager for Di Maria’s struggles. The player appears to have a vendetta against United and has not been afraid of demonstrating it in public.

The return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford this summer was in complete contrast to Di Maria. Unlike the Argentine, Ronaldo is still a much-loved figure who gets what it means to don the United jersey.
Di Maria, for all his talent, failed to grasp it and, from the looks of it, is bitter about the way it turned out. United, however, have moved on and are today a team on the rise.
