Manchester United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo made history in Portugal’s win over Ireland in the FIFA World Cup 2022 qualifiers by becoming the all-time leading goalscorer in men’s international football.

It has been a memorable week for the 36-year-old, who completed his return to Manchester United from Juventus, and has now broken the record previously held by Iran’s Ali Daei (109 goals).

Ronaldo went into the game on 108 goals and had an early opportunity to get his 109th. However, he missed from the penalty spot as Irish goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu rose well to the challenge.

The Irish looked set for a famous win but Ronaldo would not be denied. He brought Portugal level in the 89th minute and equalled Daei’s record at the same time.

The 36-year-old was not done and went on to win his side the tie in stoppage time. It was virtually the last kick of the game and showcased the standards the veteran has set despite his age.

For us at least, this should, once and for all, settle the debate between Ronaldo and Messi. Hopefully, he will go on to continue scoring for United when he takes to the field at Old Trafford.

We take a look at how some fans reacted to the moment on Twitter.
