Wayne Rooney 2021 – Net Worth, Salary, Endorsements and more
Wayne Rooney is not just a Manchester United legend, but one of the finest English players to don the Red Devils jersey in history.
The Merseysider spent 13 years at United, making a grand total of 559 appearances, scoring 253 goals in all competitions. This puts him at the head of the club’s all-time goalscorers, a stellar feat given some of the names on that list.
There are few people who don the United colours that leave behind a legacy such as Rooney. Now a manager at Derby County, he will seek to write another chapter in his illustrious career, this time as a tactician.

Wayne Rooney Net Worth and Salary
Wayne Rooney has a massive net worth of $170million. He earns a whopping $26m per season and is well off when it comes to finances, to say the least. It is not surprising, considering that Rooney was one of the highest-paid footballers around the globe during his playing career.
As a manager, the 35-year-old pockets £90,000 per week at Derby County and is the highest-paid employee at the EFL Championship club currently. However, it was reported earlier this year that the Manchester United great had deferred a portion of his salary so that his players get paid, with the club in dire straits financially.
Wayne Rooney Club Career
Rooney began playing for Liverpool Schoolboys and scored 72 goals in one season, a then-record that caught the attention of a number of teams.
He was scouted by Everton’s Bob Pendleton and joined the club at the age of nine. He scored goals for fun and rose swiftly through the club’s ranks. The 17-year-old was sent to train with the Everton first team during their 2002 pre-season.
He made his senior competitive bow the same year and rose to stardom following a stunning strike against Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal, ending their 30-match winning streak. He ended up moving to Manchester United in 2004 in a £27million deal, becoming the world’s most expensive teenager at the time.
The Englishman made his debut for the club in the 6-2 hammering of Fenerbahce, scoring a hat-trick and making one assist. A star had arrived and he was there to stay. Rooney would spend 13 seasons at United, writing his name into numerous history books before returning to Everton for the 2017-18 season.
He did not stay long on Merseyside and moved to the MLS with DC United. He enjoyed two fine years in the United States of American and rolled back the years with some eye-catching performances.
Rooney returned to England as a player-coach for EFL Championship side Derby County. He was part of a four-man interim management team following the departure of Phillip Cocu. The United legend finally took over as full-time manager in January 2021 and effectively retired from the sport as a player.
A true legend of the game, Rooney has won five Premier League titles, one FA Cup, three League Cups, one UEFA Champions League, one Europa League and one Club World Cup. He also made the MLS all-star team in 2019.
Wayne Rooney International career
Although he had the chance to represent Ireland, Rooney committed himself to the English cause. He represented England at various youth levels and was part of the Under-17 side that finished third in the UEFA Under-17 European Championship in 2002. Rooney walked away with the Golden Player award for the tournament.
He made his senior bow for the Three Lions in 2003 and was named in the squad for the 2004 Euros. He soon entrenched himself as the competition’s youngest scorer, a record that stood until the summer of 2021 when Jude Bellingham and Kacper Kozlowski both broke it in quick succession.
Rooney would go on to play in six major tournaments and passed on the opportunity to travel with Gareth Southgate’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He retired from international football in 2017.
The United legend is England’s all-time top goalscorer with 53 goals and holds the record for the second-most caps won for the country at 120. While his club career was exemplary, the performances at the international stage left much to be desired.
Wayne Rooney Current Job
Wayne Rooney is the manager of EFL Championship side Derby County. The Englishman’s time at Pride Park has been less than spectacular. Derby escaped relegation in the 2020/21 season by the skin of their teeth.
Since taking over as full-time manager in January, Rooney has not enjoyed a good spell and his win ratio is less than impressive. But the financial situation of the club has not helped matters for the 35-year-old.
Rooney’s legacy as a player is well known. As a manager, however, there is much to be achieved. Whether he will learn on the job or join the ‘list of world-class players who couldn’t manage to save their lives’ remains to be seen.
Wayne Rooney Family, Wife, Kids and Personal Life
Wayne Rooney met his wife, Coleen McLoughlin, while the both of them were at secondary school. They dated for six years before tying the knot on 12 June 2008 after six years of dating.
The couple have four sons: Kai Wayne (born 2 November 2009), Klay Anthony (born 21 May 2013), Kit Joseph (born 24 January 2016), and Cass Mac (born 15 February 2018). Kai signed with Manchester United in 2020. Whether he will keep the Rooney legacy going remains to be seen.
Rooney’s younger brother, John Rooney, is also a professional footballer and plays for Stockport County. One of his cousins, Tommy, is also a footballer.
Wayne Rooney Endorsements
Rooney has endorsement deals with the likes of Nike, Ford, Nokia, Asda and Coca Cola. He also made it to the cover of the famous video game FIFA for six consecutive years from 2006 to 2012.
Rooney signed the largest sportsbook deal in publishing history with Harper Collins in 2006. This saw him earn £5million in advance plus royalties for a minimum of five books to be published over a 12-year period.
Rooney also holds interests in real estate. In 2019, he paid £20m for a 6-bedroom home in Cheshire, England and also shelled out £320,000 for a waterfront apartment in Port Charlotte, Florida, in 2017. He owns a £5m Barbados villa, which was purchased in 2010; Rooney began renting the Barbados home out in 2015, asking between £10,000 and £25,000 per week, depending on the season.
