Transfer News: Manchester United star Edinson Cavani offered to Barcelona on deadline day

According to Mundo Deportivo (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United star Edinson Cavani has been offered to Barcelona as the transfer window draws to a close.

The Uruguayan veteran enjoyed a stellar 2020/21 campaign and ended the season as the Red Devils’ top frontman. He has since signed a one year deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until next summer.

Barcelona are in the market for a number nine and could do with someone like Cavani who excels at the role despite his age. According to the report, Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford could pave the way for Cavani to leave the club.

It goes on to add that Ronaldo’s return could diminish Cavani’s role at the club. He does not appear to be too keen to experience it and would rather seek his fortunes elsewhere.

The 34-year-old’s move to the Nou Camp is, however, fraught with uncertainty. A major reason for it is his massive salary. Barcelona are currently going through a tumultuous time financially and will struggle to match the wages on offer at United.

While it may be difficult, it is certainly not impossible. Whether that is truly the case remains to be seen.

Reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has since piped in and confirmed that Cavani is a part of United’s plans for the season. However, things could change if ‘something crazy’ happens. Whether it comes to that or not remains to be seen.

After a late return from the summer break, Cavani featured for over 30 minutes against Wolves this past weekend. Whether he is still the club’s first-choice striker or will play a supporting role to Ronaldo remains to be seen.
