He is very highly regarded at the club, courtesy of which, for a brief period between October 2013 and June 2014, he was appointed as the Global Ambassador of the club. During this period earned nearly €2.9million ($3.41million) per month, adding to his massive earnings.
Sir Alex Ferguson Playing Career
A forward by nature, Alex Ferguson started playing his football in the youth ranks of Harmony Boys Row Club and later moved on to Drumchapel Amateurs, a Scottish club in Glasgow.
Ferguson started playing professionally at the age of 16 itself when he joined Queen’s Park. He mentioned his debut at the club as a ‘nightmare’ despite scoring on the day. Although he performed well at the club, he could not find consistent game-time, courtesy of which he later joined St Johnstone. This was a tough time for the youngster as he was also working part-time at a Govan shipyard.
However, Ferguson did not let this deter his performances and he impressed at the club, so much so, that Dunfermline snapped up in 1964. The Scot guided Dunfermline to a Scottish Cup final in his second season at the club but did not feature in the final and the club lost 3-2 on the day while they also lost out on the Scottish Premiership by a single point. However, by now, Ferguson was at the peak of his game and he showed it in the 1965-66 season, where he managed to score 45 goals in 51 games for the club, courtesy of which he was also the top goal-scorer in the Scottish league that year with 31 goals to his name.
He went on to join Rangers for a record fee of £65,000 and although he performed well, he failed to win trophies there. After two years at Rangers, he joined Falkirk and played as one of the most experienced players in the squad while he also racked up his highest senior appearances at the club. He was also promoted to player-coach at the club but soon left the club for Ayr United, where he ended his career in 1974.
Sir Alex Ferguson Managerial Career
As great as his playing career was, Ferguson, will always be highly regarded for his managerial career. The Scotsman took his first steps into management as a part-time job at East Stirlingshire, after which, he joined St Mirren.
He performed an incredible job there as he took the club from a mid-table second division club to the champions of the first division. The impressive statistic of his title-winning team was that the average age of that team was 19. However, things soon turned sour between Ferguson and St Mirren and the club sacked him.
He soon joined Aberdeen and went on to win the Scottish League with them and was also known with the nickname of ‘Furious Fergie’ as he had a disciplinarian personality. His first taste of managerial glory was when he drove Aberdeen to European success in 1983 beating the likes of Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. He also went on to win the European Super Cup while he also snapped up the Scottish League twice in the next 4 years.
His managerial performances were so impressive that Manchester United signed him in 1986, and this was the first step towards glory on the world stage for the Scotsman. It took quite a while before he settled in at the club and was also on the brink of being sacked in 1989, a period he described as the ‘darkest period of his managerial career’.
However, what followed was pure magic. The Scot inculcated a lot of youth into his side, and it became so famous that it was eventually called the ‘Class of 92’. It boasted the likes of Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt, David Beckham, and Paul Scholes. However, this never stopped Ferguson from adding great players to his squad like Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Andy Cole, Dwight Yorke, Rio Ferdinand, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, Carlos Tevez, Robin van Persie, and several others.
In what is considered to be a ‘golden era’ at the club, Ferguson drove the club to 13 Premier League titles, 5 FA Cups, 4 League Cups, 2 UEFA Champions Leagues, 1 European Cup Winners’ Cup, 1 FIFA Club World Cup, and 1 Intercontinental Cup. He eventually retired in 2013, after 27 years of managing the club.
