Manchester United midfielder James Garner set to leave on loan confirms Solskjaer

Speaking to the media ahead of the game against Southampton (h/t Nottinghamshire Live), Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that midfielder James Garner will be leaving on loan this summer.

A product of the Manchester United youth academy, Garner made his first-team debut in February 2019 and has since gone on to feature seven times for the Red Devils in all competitions.

Garner spent the first half of the last season on loan at Watford, featuring 21 times and registering a solitary assist. The 20-year-old subsequently spent the second half of the campaign at Nottingham Forest, where he impressed a great deal, bagging four goals in 20 games.

Back at Old Trafford in the summer, the midfielder was a regular fixture in the pre-season for Manchester United. However, given the competition for places in midfield already, it was always unlikely that he would be able to get any meaningful game-time once the season began.

And, Solskjaer has confirmed as much, insisting that Garner’s loan move is all but done, with the youngster needing to play regularly.

“I would definitely think Jimmy will go on loan, that’s more or less done, he’s done really well in pre-season and really impressed me. For his career, another season or another six months playing regularly will help him.”

The report further adds that it is likely that Garner ends up returning to Nottingham Forest for another loan spell. Moving back to the City Grounds, where he has gained experience and is familiar with the surroundings could prove to be a smart move. Regular minutes will be key for him to develop into a top player.
