Newcastle United are interested in signing Manchester United star Jesse Lingard on loan.

Transfer News: Jesse Lingard to reconsider his Manchester United future

According to The Times (Subscription Required), Manchester United star Jesse Lingard will reconsider his position at the club in the coming days.

The 28-year-old returned to Old Trafford following an excellent loan spell at West Ham United.

However, his position at United is far from secure. While he will get opportunities, Lingard is far from a first XI player right now. The addition of Jadon Sancho proves to be another obstacle on his part to regular playtime.

Lingard missed United’s season opener against Leeds United after testing positive for COVID-19. He has since returned to training and also scored in the behind-closed-doors match against Burnley at Old Trafford on Tuesday.

The 28-year-old would now be in contention to face Southampton at St Mary’s this Sunday. Whether Ole Gunnar Solskajer will take him along remains to be seen.

Lingard can also function as a number 10. However, the presence of Bruno Fernandes largely renders it moot. The 28-year-old is keen to return to the England fold and knows a lack of regular playtime could hamper his chances.

It remains to be seen if he will accept a limited role this season. United, for their part, have been privy to enquiries to the player but no concrete offers have yet been made.

The Red Devils were seeking £30m for Lingard this summer but have now dropped their asking price to £20m. His stock has never been higher and it remains to be seen if any club will bite before the summer window shuts.
