Raphael Varane available as Manchester United prepare to take on Southampton

According to the club’s official site, summer signing Raphael Varane is in contention as Manchester United prepare to take on Southampton in the Premier League this weekend.

The Frenchman was in attendance for our opening day demolition of Leeds United but could only watch on from the stands. With the deal now official, he could make his first-team bow for the club at St Mary’s.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will understandably have a number of decisions to make given the performance last week. Jadon Sancho made his debut off the bench last time around and it remains to be seen if he will be brought into the starting XI.

Jesse Lingard is also available after serving time out due to COVID-19. He played in the midweek friendly against Burnley and also scored. He is slowly yet surely showing signs of being consistent and it remains to be seen if he will feature.

Goalkeeper Dean Henderson is making progress after suffering from COVID-19 while Phil Jones has also returned to action. Whether either of them is deemed fit to make the trip to the South Coast.

Both Alex Telles and Marcus Rashford are sidelined and are unavailable for selection. But with the United frontline firing and Luke Shaw continuing from where he left off last season, the duo will not be missed much.

Solskjaer is blessed with options and can employ a number of different setups against Southampton. Which side he chooses to go with remains to be seen.

United go into the game as favourites and should be able to win the game comfortably. Edinson Cavani helped United overturn a two-goal deficit in the corresponding fixture last season. While the Uruguayan is back in training, he appears unlikely to be part of the travelling squad.
