Transfer News: Manchester United to battle Real Madrid for Erling Haaland
According to The Daily Star (h/t The Express), Manchester United will have to beat off the competition from Real Madrid for Erling Haaland next summer.
The Norwegian striker is one of the most prolific players in world football right now and has attracted attention from some of the world’s best clubs. He has started the 2021/22 season with a bang and has an incredible five goals and three assists in just two games so far.
Just 21, the youngster’s potential is truly terrifying. He could very well turn into the best striker in the world in the years to come. While a number of clubs were keen on him this summer, Borussia Dortmund’s massive £150m asking price proved to be too much.
A lot can change in a year’s time when the player’s £65m release clause comes into play. Whosoever lands him for that price could be getting themselves a deal to remember. While United remain keen, they will have to compete with Real Madrid.
The Spaniards have had a rather subdued summer window and are in need of massive rebuilding. With them refrain to go big this summer until now, the focus would now be on the window in 2022.
The Spaniards are keen to bring in Paul Pogba, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe next season. Given that Pogba and Mbappe could potentially be free agents, there is every chance they could pull it off.
While Real are a club steemed in football folklore, they are far from the Champions League winning machine that we have grown accustomed to in the 2010s. In fact, much work is needed to see them challenge once again for major honours on the continent.
United are, meanwhile, further along in their development cycle and arguably represent a much more promising destination. The arrival of Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane has strengthened Ole Gunnar Solskajer’s hand this summer. Throw Haaland into the mix and we will have arguably one of the best forward line in the world.
