Paul Scholes claims it may be one year too soon for Manchester United to win the title after Leeds win
Speaking on Premier League productions (h/t MEN), former Manchester United midfielder and club legend Paul Scholes has rated the club’s title chances after the win against Leeds.
United kickstarted the 2021/22 season with a bang as they thrashed arch-rivals Leeds 5-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. Bruno Fernandes handed the Red Devils the lead in the first half before Luke Ayling levelled things early after the break.
What followed was a stunning display of attacking football as Mason Greenwood put Manchester United back in the lead minutes later, before Fernandes added a third to kill the game only moments after. The Portuguese international would then go on to complete his hat-trick before Fred also got into the goalscoring act.
It was a stunning display from Manchester United, one that would have gotten the most pessimistic of fans excited. However, club legend Scholes believes that the Red Devils might have to wait another year to win the league title.
“United teams over the last six or seven years, it’s not always been as exciting as what we’ve seen now. When Liverpool won the league for the first time, when City won the league for the first time, you felt them coming in the year or two before, you felt they were ready to win the league. I didn’t really get that impression last year.
“I wonder whether this is the year that ‘they’re coming’ and it’ll be next year they win the league. I don’t know. It’s hard to say, it’s the first game of the season, but you can be nothing but excited by what we’ve seen today, and what’s to come from the rest of the squad.”
