Transfer News: Manchester United fear Paul Pogba will not sign new contract and leave as a free agent
According to ESPN (h/t Daily Star), Manchester United are convinced that Paul Pogba will remain at Manchester United for at least one more season as his contract runs down.
There was interest from PSG for a transfer this summer and the Red Devils were apparently open to entertaining a £60million bid for him. But that now looks to be off the table with Lionel Messi’s arrival at Parc des Princes.
Amidst this, the report mentions that United are confident Pogba will stay at Old Trafford for at least this season, and they will use that time to try and convince him to renew his contract.
However, they ‘fear’ that the 28-year-old midfielder has already made up his mind about leaving on a free transfer next summer. That would, of course, mean an £89million loss on the world-record fee we paid for him back in 2016.
Pogba to PSG not happening this summer?
If Pogba stays and doesn’t renew his deal, United could know his next club as early as January 2022. The Frenchman would be allowed to speak to foreign clubs in January regarding a free transfer for the summer.
It is never a pleasant sight for the fans to see a quality player like Pogba leave. And for the club, it is nothing short of a nightmare scenario to lose such an asset for nothing in terms of transfer fees.
Hopefully, Pogba decides to put pen to paper on a new deal and stays beyond next summer. The club have even signed two superstars in Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho this season to become more competitive.
