Transfer News: Manchester United starlet Ethan Laird set to join Swansea City on loan

According to Manchester Evening News, Manchester United starlet, Ethan Laird is set to join Championship side Swansea City on a season-long loan.

The youngster spent last season on loan at MK Dons where he made a positive impression. He now looks set to reunite with former Dons boss Russell Martin who is now in charge at the Liberty Stadium. The deal could be completed as early as the end of this week.

One of the bright young talents to come out of the academy in recent years, Laird has the potential to make a name for himself in the game. He has already made his senior bow in the UEFA Europa League but has received precious other opportunities.

Having proven his worth in the third division, Laird is now ready to test himself at a higher level. While it isn’t yet the Premier League, the gradual development will do his chances good. After all the likes of James Maddison, Jack Grealish among others impressed in the Championship before making the step up.

Laird is not the only promising player leaving United on loan this summer. The likes of Tahith Chong, Axel Tuanzebe and Facundo Pellistri have all departed Old Trafford in search of regular playtime. It should hold them in good stead when they return to United. There is precious little to be gained by warming the bench.

Laird, for his part, has had to battle numerous injuries in order to gain regular playtime. His time at MK Dons was especially useful as he made the right-back position his own. It certainly was a testament to his ability as a talented player and it is now for him to keep progressing up the ranks.

The 20-year-old has two years left on his current deal at United. Whether a good spell with the Swans will convince Solskjaer to keep him around remains to be seen.

United are currently in the market for a right-back and are targeting Kieran Trippier. The 30-year-old is not likely to be a long term solution and will need to be replaced in 3-4 years tops. Whether Laird can stake a claim for a spot at Old Trafford remains to be seen.
