Transfer News: Manchester United considering a late move for Lionel Messi
Speaking on the Transfer Window Podcast (h/t Daily Star), Duncan Castles has revealed that Manchester United could consider making a late punt to pip Paris Saint-Germain to the signing of Lionel Messi.
The Argentine legend is arguably the greatest player to ever play the game and is currently a free agent after parting ways with Barcelona. While staying on at the Nou Camp was a possibility, the Catalan side’s disastrous financial condition rendered it impossible.
Despite turning 34, Messi remains a dangerous player who still has the fire in him. Having just won an international title with Argentina, he will be raring to go. Add to it a new challenge at a new club and it might just be the football Jesus’ second coming.
Messi has been heavily linked to a move to Paris Saint-Germain where he would reunite with former Barcelona teammate Neymar. With French wonderkind Kylian Mbappe also present, the Ligue 1 giants are potentially looking at a strike force that could outscore opposition at will.
The deal, however, is not completed and that gives other clubs just enough time to make their move. Duncan Castles believes that could be the case should United plot a late swoop. While he is not getting any younger, Messi continues to be a draw both on the field and in financial terms.
“He’s available and looking for a club. It’s interesting to see what decisions will be taken by clubs.”
“It’s interesting Manchester United – who have talked about their coherent strategy and planning that have gone into their transfers and they’ve been quick to do deals for two important players in positions where they needed players in – are saying, ‘Well, can we do something for Messi?”
It will come as no surprise that a club such as United are interested in Messi. After all, we are one of the most storied teams in world football. In fact, the Argentine ace is also aware of our footballing heritage and has openly mentioned so in the past.

Messi is one of the greatest players in the history of the game. The opportunity to sign someone of his calibre is not something that comes along often. However, any move now could prove to be too late and it will come as a surprise if he ends up anywhere else but PSG.
