“Acceptable offer”: Journalist reveals Man United’s stance on 28-year-old midfielder amidst exit links

Jesse Lingard has had a good pre-season with Manchester United.

Transfer News: Manchester United open to Jesse Lingard exit but only for an acceptable offer

Manchester Evening News journalist Samuel Luckhurst revealed in a Q&A session that Jesse Lingard can leave Manchester United this summer if a club comes in with an acceptable offer.

The 28-year-old has failed to carve out a niche for himself under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But a loan spell at West Ham United in the second half of last season re-ignited his career.

Since then, the English midfielder is linked with an exit, especially considering he is in the last year of his contract. And that, according to Luckhurst, is a factor that can complicate matters.

Potential suitors would be more willing to make an approach once he is a free agent, whereas United want a respectable fee for him given his stocks are high right now. But the club, if approached with an ‘acceptable offer’, would be willing to part ways with him.

Time to go for Jesse?

“Because Lingard’s into the last year of his contract, a lot of clubs will only be prepared to go for him next year as money is tight. For those considering a move this summer, money is also tight, so if a deal does happen it is going to be late in the window. Lingard’s value is quite high at the moment, so United are not going to give him away for tuppence.”

Luckhurst then added that Lingard would stay beyond September if an acceptable offer does not come for him. The 28-year-old has been at the club for 21 years and despite his inconsistent United form, has given fans many moments to cherish.

“Ultimately, United are dependent on a club submitting an acceptable offer for Lingard. If one isn’t forthcoming, he’ll likely still be there beyond September. A loan is of little help, as United would want to obtain a fee.”

A loan at 28 wouldn’t make sense for the club especially if Lingard leaves without signing a new deal, as it could mean losing the player on a free next year. That, however, remains to be seen and is something only time can tell.
