Manchester United have been linked with Atletico Madrid and Spain midfielder, Saul Niguez.

Fabrizio Romano: Manchester United could land Saul Niguez for between £34m-£38m

Speaking to The United Stand (h/t Manchester Evening News), reliable journalist Fabrizio Romano has shed light on Manchester United and their pursuit of Saul Niguez.

The Spanish international endured a difficult season at Atletico Madrid last time around and saw himself fall down the pecking order at the club. He made 41 appearances in all competitions as they won the La Liga title last season. Of his 33 appearances in La Liga, only 22 have come as a starter.

One seen as an integral part of Diego Simeone’s system, he isn’t untouchable anymore and could be allowed to move on this summer. There is an opportunity to land the 26-year-old here and United are making overtures. At 26, he is entering his prime and is proven at the highest level. Niguez will certainly add industry and quality to the Red Devils’ midfield.

According to the report, Romano confirms that United are in touch with the player’s representatives regarding a potential switch. While an offer is yet to be made, work appears to be getting done behind the scenes.

Atletico are reeling from the financial crisis that has engulfed the sport and are keen to cash in on the player. This is good news for United who are in a position to sign Niguez on the cheap, given his release clause. The 26-year-old would set the Red Devils back by between £34m-£38m, a rather fair price considering his quality.

A replacement for Pogba?

Seize the day

The Spanish champions have already signed Argentine international Rodrigo de Paul who could be a readymade replacement for Niguez should he leave. As things stand, it would appear that all United need to do is meet the asking price for the midfielder. Whether they will do so remains to be seen.

Having already signed Jadon Sancho and agreed on terms for Raphael Varane, United are flying high in the summer transfer window. Adding Niguez to the mix would be the cherry on top of what has been excellent business by the club. The Spaniard will not just add quality to our squad but could also replace Paul Pogba should the Frenchman decide to depart. At the quoted price, it would be foolhardy of us to not make an attempt to land the player.

This is not the first time that we have been linked with the player. The Red Devils kept a keen eye on the Spaniard during David Moyes’ time in charge. Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be. Seven years on, it remains to be seen if we will seize the opportunity to add him to our ranks.
