Lack of suitors for Phil Jones is blocking Manchester United from raising funds this summer as Solskjaer looks to offload the deadwood
According to the Manchester Evening News (h/t Daily Mail), Phil Jones is proving to become an unsellable player for Manchester United, with the club looking to sell the deadwood at the club.
Jones, who last played a game for the Red Devils at the beginning of 2020, has been out with a knee injury for nearly 18 months. This has led to the defender being down in the pecking order of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who will have plenty of centre-backs to choose from this season.
With Manchester United already having the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Axel Tuanzebe, and newly signed Raphael Varane in their ranks, Phil Jones might suffer for game time this season.
Although the defender has recovered from his injury and has travelled with the United squad for their pre-season training camp to Scotland, he will have to put in a lot of effort to become a regular name in the squad, let alone in the starting line-up.
Moreover, the fact that Phil Jones signed a new 4-year deal with the club midway through the 2018-19 season, means that he still has two years remaining on his contract, a deal which is earning him £4million per year – money that could be used by United to generate funds for some of their other summer transfer targets.
While there are not a lot of suitors for the central defender, David Moyes is keen on reuniting with Phil Jones by bringing him to West Ham United on a free transfer this summer. This move could help the Red Devils free up some money in their wage bill, while it could also provide the Englishman with a new lease on his career.
Although United are keen on offloading the player this summer, it remains to be seen whether West Ham United will actually sign the 29-year-old this summer.
